Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

A URL (or uniform resource locator) is the address of a file on the Internet. It usually takes this form:

protocol://machine.name[:port]/directory/file.name

The protocol is the Internet protocol used to transmit the file. When accessing a WWW server, the protocol is typically http, but other protocols are supported (ftp, gopher, news, and file). The machine name is the domain name of the server where the file is stored (such as www.company.com). The :port part of the address is only required when a non-standard TCP port number is used.
